Medical Box: Syrup, Ipecacuanha, 34 Bottles, 1 Fl. Oz. Ea., 6505-00-B29-9167
This small medical box was inspired by a similar box I found browsing the Web for ideas. Constructed of pine, with basic butt joints, this was built without a lid, just like the original.
The black 1/4-in stencils found on one end only denote that this box once held 34 bottles of syrup of ipecac, packed in March 1961, destined for a relief operation in the Third World. Like all Waffenkiste Design art creations, this box is brand new.
This was an easy box to construct, as I did not have to fit a lid or hardware to it. The white and red cross were formed from two stencils, and were painted on front and back. The yellow box is painted inside and out, a first for a WkD design. It was also the first time I used my Marsh 1/4-in stencil machine for a project. Unlike the original, which was long and narrow, I made this one so I could fit 8.5x11-in papers or a binder inside of it, to make it useful on a daily basis. I had to make the stencils something humorous, as packing this full of bandages just wasn't going to be unusual enough. Built over a weekend in July 2018. (In personal collection.)

Caisse, Munitions. 2045 Cart de 7.5 Mle 1929 C, Lot 375 ALM 76
This large chest was constructed with post-war French military crates as the model. Constructed of pine with cleats front and rear protecting the large latches and hinges, this robust box is unpainted. Six very large cleats surround the edges of the box, with two substantial side handles protecting the chest and allow it to be carried, especially if full.
The stencils denote this box held 2,045 7.5mm French Model 1929 rifle cartridges, produced in 1976. Like all Waffenkiste Design art creations, this box is brand new.
I finally constructed a solid crate that was true to the French Army boxes (caisse) I found pictured on the Internet. A fortuitous search found very large J.W. Winco series GN 832 steel toggle latches (clamp size 200) off of Amazon, so I used those for the front latches. The hardware was painted semi-gloss black, which I think makes this robust box look like it has seen the back of a Acmat light tactical truck driving somewhere in Alsace-Lorraine. Most of the hardware was secured with machine screws mated to captive nuts. It took about two weeks in May 2017 to construct the box, which is built to last. (In personal collection.)

Box, Chemical Ammunition: Area Dispenser, Agent (VX), 1365-00-514-7209-K732, M1127 W/ M49 Timer. Lot A-59.
This medium-sized chest was constructed of pine with four cleats protecting the two front toggle latches. Two robust side handles allow the chest to be easily carried. The box is painted grey-green. The interior is rough and unpainted. Like all Waffenkiste Designs art creations, this box is brand new.
The stencil marking denote the item inside was a VX nerve gas area dispenser, nicknamed by chemical warfare treaty negotiators as "the Citykiller." The DOD form attached to the lid indicate the 1970s-era device was banned by a 1997 treaty and was sent to Johnston Island, Hawaii to be disposed of in the early 2000s. The rubber stamp on the rear indicates that sometime in the 1980s the original program was painted over when the device was transferred for use by NATO's Gladio behind-Soviet-lines commandos, with the program being administered by a Ft. Detrick, Maryland unit.
This box was a lot of fun to construct. It is an amalgamation of French cleats, Russian side handles, and basic US military box construction, so it is a one-of-a-kind container. The markings and DOD form are based on some images I researched on the Web that could be found on the wood box holding this imaginary horrible weapon, which thankfully never existed.
I needed a project to use up some wood and hardware left over from the 2014 builds, and I was very pleased with the results. This April 2017 project included two weeks in the paint and stencil shop; this art on this one took a long, long time. Usually the stencil work takes about a week, especially if there are multiple layers, but this one was complex art on every single side. The front big "VX" marking was a hand-cut stencil. And of course, since this had a custom stamp to create and apply, that work was an extra afternoon of labor. (In personal collection.)

Box, Ammunition: 720 Rds., 7.62mm Ball L2A2, In Ctns Mk 3. RG 22.7.79
This medium-sized chest was constructed of rough cut beech with two cleats top and bottom. The corners are box joints, with two large steel handles at each ends. The box is painted flat brown. The yellow stencil markings denote the the box once contained 720 7.62mm cartridges for the L1A1 British Army battle rifle, packed in 1979 for use by the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) in Germany. The interior is rough and unpainted. Like all Waffenkiste Designs art creations, this box is brand new.
Construction started on this box in fall 2013, but I had to await a rubber stamp font set that allowed me to replicate the markings on British Army ammunition chests of the Cold War era. I finally finished this in late July 2014. (In personal collection.)
Exterior dimensions: 18.0-in length x 9.75-in width x 8.75 height

Caisse, Munitions: 1350 Cart. de 7,5. Mle. 1929 C, LOT 238-ALM-1968.
This large chest was constructed of rough cut pine with two top cleats, two rear cleats, and two cleats to protect the single front latch. Two large hinges connect the top with the chest, and two wooden side handles allow the chest to be carried. The stencil marking on the outside denote that this is a French Army ammunition chest containing 1,350 cartridges of Model 1929 7.5mm rifle ammunition made in 1968. The interior and exterior are rough and unpainted. Like all Waffenkiste Designs art creations, this box is brand new.
Construction was started on this in January '14, but I had to await the arrival of industrial printing equipment to create the large stencils. I custom-made a large 17x7.5-in curved rubber stamp to handle the printing requirements. The two unique shaped stencils were cut by hand. This box was finally finished in July. in 2017, I obtained a much larger latch for the box and placed two larger front cleats (not pictured). (In personal collection.)

Box, Granate, Hand. 1330-00-133-8244, Mit Handgranatenzünder.
This green grenade box was created to fit the size of a round cardboard container that once held many years ago a real M61 grenade I threw during National Guard infantry training. Made from fir, it has two bottom cleats to raise it above a similar container. The wood top is attached with two large gate hinges, and secured with two swivel hasps. There are two steel chest handles attached on either end to help carry a heavy box. Two D-rings on front and back could help secure this box during transit. The stencil markings are reminiscent of real Bundeswehr grenade cases I have seen on the Internet. (In personal collection.)
